Laffey advances to second day of All-States
Franklin County Technical School’s Kyle Laffey recorded two wins during the evening to advance past Day 1 of the Massachusetts All-State Wrestling Championships on Friday at Tsongas Arena in Lowell.
Eagles teammate Brett Bean, however, was eliminated from the competition after dropping his two bouts.
Laffey entered the tournament as the runner-up at 160 pounds in the Western Mass. Championships and the third-place finisher at the State Division III meet.
The senior started the day out against Pembroke High School’s Ian Horkan and the two battled through two-and-a-half periods, tied at 7-7. Horkan got control at the midpoint of the third period and managed to pin Laffey with 56 seconds left in the match to earn the win.
Laffey rallied to win his second match, as he bested Alec O’Brien of Reading High School, 9-3, then he gutted out a 4-2 decision over Ryan Harty of Plymouth South High School to move on to the final four of the consolation bracket. Laffey will return to the mat today to face Jake Ahern of Chelmsford High School.
Brett Bean struggled in the 145-pound class. Bean, who finished as the runner-up at WMass at 145 and took sixth place at the State Division III meet, opened his day against Jared Costa of St. John’s Prep and suffered an 11-2 defeat to drop to the consolation bracket. There, Bean ran into a familiar foe as he went up against Bobby O’Connell from South Hadley High School, who beat Bean in the title match at the WMass Division III championships, and also defeated Bean in the fifth-sixth place match last weekend. Wrestling for the third straight weekend against one another, O’Connell continued his dominance over Bean, earning a major decision win, 14-5.
