Mohawk, Frontier near titles

The Mohawk Trail Regional High School girls and Frontier Regional School boys both closed in on divisional titles after their performances during the PVIAC Alpine Ski League on Wednesday at Berkshire East Ski Resort in Charlemont.

The Warriors used three top-10 finishers to roll to another dominating victory in the South team competition and will carry a four-point lead into Thursday’s . Frontier was a distant second.

Caitlyn Wilkins showcased her slalom skills by winning the individual race in 39.70 seconds, which was good for fourth overall. Frontier’s Alli Zera was second in the South and 10th overall (41.59), Mohawk’s Tyler Rice came in fifth in the South (48.76), Frontier’s Jess Cobb was sixth (51.11), Mohawk’s Lizzie Herzig placed seventh (51.82) and the Warriors’ Christina Lively wound up ninth (53.09).

The Red Hawk boys, meanwhile, finished second to Gateway Regional High School in the team race and will carry a four-point lead into the season finale.

Sean Doyle continued his consistent effort for Frontier, as he placed second in the South giant slalom and fifth overall in 23.82.

In the boys’ North, Mohawk clinched the runner-up spot with another second-place finish. Two Warriors placed in the divisional top 10, as John White finished second in 23.44, and Jameson Rice placed 10th (13th overall) in 24.76.

Thursday’s regular season finale begins at 5 p.m.

School hockey

Turners 3, Comp 3 — Turners Falls High School scored twice in a 47-second span of the third period and earned a 3-3 tie with Chicopee Comprehensive High School in a Fay-Wright Division hockey game Tuesday night at Fitzpatrick Arena in Holyoke.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the final frame, Cody Booska scored at 4:48, assisted by Tim Atkins, then Atkins used helpers from Booska and Ryan Waldron at 5:35 to even it up.

Atkins score the opening goal at 3:31, with assists from Booska and Dna Moro.

Travis Seymour tied it at 9:44 for the Colts, then Jeremy Lewis scored twice in the third to give Comp its 3-1 lead.

Brandon Bryant made 48 saves in goal for Turners, which was outshot 51-34. Nick Moisan stopped 31 shots for Comp.

Turners (6-7-2, 3-7-1 Fay-Wright) next plays on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Belchertown High School at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.


FC Tech 48, Granby 30 — The Franklin County Technical School wrestling team took to the road Tuesday afternoon, and beat Suburban League rival Granby High School in a dual meet, 48-30.

At 120 lbs., Tyler Rock pinned Victor Magalhaes in 2 minutes, 46 seconds. Nate Crocker, wrestling at 138, felled Colin Mick in 46 seconds. At 145, Brett Bean took down Phil Roberts in 36 seconds. At 160, Kyle Laffey kept his season long unbeaten streak alive, winning by fall over Tyler Dubek in just 32 seconds. At 220, Jonathan Rawls pinned Kyle Gilbert in 1:11. Rounding out the day, Lance Hansen dropped Dao Phutnduorgsa in 2:59. The other two Eagles’ victories came via forfeit.

The victory moves Tech to 11-11 overall, and 3-2 in the SL. The Eagles are next on the mat Saturday morning at 10 when they host the Franklin Tech Super Quad.
