Bulletin Board: Jobst earns Division III academic honor

Former Mahar Regional School basketball player and Athol native Dane Jobst has been named to the Capital One Academic Division III District I Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The Worcester State University men’s basketball senior now moves on to the national ballot.

Jobst becomes the first player on the WSU men’s basketball team to earn the accolades in 20 years, and is the only student-athlete from the MASCAC chosen to the first team. District I includes schools from Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Jobst has been a leader on the team this season, averaging 17 points and 13 rebounds, with 11 double-doubles in 17 games. He currently ranks fourth in the nation in Division III in total rebounds (215) and fifth in rebounds per game (12.6), while ranking among the top 30 scorers in New England. He also boasts a 3.91 grade point average with a major in criminal justice.

Newt registrations

The Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League will hold registrations during the upcoming week.

On Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the registrations will take place at the Montague Police Department community room On Feb. 8, registrations will run from 10 a.m. until noon in the gymnasium at Turners Falls High School. Use the side door near the locker rooms to enter that day. The third registration session will run on Feb. 9 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Montague Police Dept. community room.

The league is open to residents of all area communities except Greenfield, Mohawk and Frontier. Cost is $75 and bring a birth certificate to the registration.

Basketball

K of C Hoop Shoot

Emily Young was the youngest champion at the Knights of Columbus Hoop Shoot last weekend at the Greenfield YMCA but she showed that age doesn’t matter as she tied for the most made free throws to win her division and join seven other local kids in advancing to the District Championships on Feb. 22.

Young, from Turners Falls, won the 9-year-old girls’ division with 11 made free throws out of 15 attempts, while Montague’s David Carey was the boys’ 9 winner with 10 made. Christopher Ryan from Northfield won the boys’ 10 division with 10, and Kyle White from Greenfield won the boys’ 11 division with nine free throws. In the 12-year-old division, Greenfield’s Raegan Hickey won the girls’ division with 11, while Xavier Santiago from Millers Falls won the boys’ division with 10. Montague’s Tyler Lavin won the boys’ 13 division with nine made free throws, and Montague’s Kylie Fleming won the girls’ 14 division with eight made free throws.

The District Championships will be held at the Greenfield YMCA.
