HINSDALE, N.H. -- Harold S. Ames Jr., 81, of 6 Cedar St., died Monday (12-14-09) at home, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Brattleboro, Vt., March 10, 1928, the son of Harold S. Sr. and Evelyn (Willett) Ames. He attended Greenfield High School.
He was an U.S. Army Military Police veteran.
Harold worked for the Hinsdale schools as a custodian, retiring in 1993. Previously, he worked for Amp Keyboard Technology and Hathaway Bakery.
He was a big fan of the L.A. Dodgers and the N.Y. Rangers. Harold was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Greenfield and a member of the American Legion in Hinsdale. He loved spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, the former Hazel Hillman, on March 23, 2005.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Ames and his wife Kathy and Larry Ames and his wife Gail, all of Hinsdale; five daughters, Cindy Ames of Hinsdale, Barb Ames and her companion Mike Flynn of Gill, Mass., Lori Ames and her companion Harold Page of Hinsdale, Brenda Ames and her companion Ed Doyle of Hinsdale, Tracy Ames and her companion Keith Owen of Hinsdale; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and also several nieces and nephews. Harold also leaves a very special friend, Ruth Johnson of Northfield, Mass.
Services will be Friday (12-18-09) at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls, Mass.
A calling hour will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring in West Northfield Cemetery.
