LEYDEN — A single-car rollover accident sent a woman and small child to the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

Jonathan Ayala came upon the crashed Chevrolet shortly after the accident.

“The mother had a small cut, but it wasn’t bad. She seemed fine,” he said. “Her daughter was in a car seat and she seemed as safe as could be, but she was shaken up and scared.”

Ayala said the two were alone in the vehicle and the mother was able to remove herself from the car before tending to her child.

“She was in the backseat struggling to get her daughter out when I got there,” he said.

Ayala said the scene looked worse than it was.

“The car was upside down, leaking fluids, there was broken glass everywhere and all the air bags had gone off,” he said. “It’s a miracle they’re as good as they are right now.”

The two were taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center to be evaluated.

Ayala said the driver told him that her brakes had gone out and her steering wheel locked up, causing her to hit a tree before rolling over.

Leyden Police Chief Daniel Galvis, who responded to the scene, refused to comment on the accident or the condition of the mother and child.

I was the driver of this accident. We are ok, just a few bumps and bruises (mainly me) we are just shaken up. My steering wheel locked up which caused me to swerve and hit the tree then rollover and end up on the roof. Didn't get a chance to use my brakes. It did look worse than it was.

and the only reason the police chief couldn't comment on the condition of us was because he didn't do a patient check on us he just showed up and went to the car. Didn't even show concern and claims I was speeding when no one was around and I wasn't. The speed limit on that stretch is 40mph and I was going a few mph's less than that.
