Letter: Where were you?

The residents of the Town of Bernardston should be ashamed of themselves. May 29 was the annual town meeting and 74 of the 1,400 and some odd registered voters came to the meeting to vote in a $4.5 million budget.

Having passed this budget, our tax rate goes up 40 cents on every $1,000 of assessed value. In other words, if your home is assessed at $200,000 your taxes will go up $800 per year and if it is assessed at $300,000 your taxes will go up $1,200.

To the voters who stayed home: Don’t complain when you see your next tax bill. You are part of the problem.

Actually, a 40 cent per thousand increase on a $200,000 house would result only in an $80 per year jump. Not $800. That's less than 7 bucks a month. On a $300,000 house, the annual increase would be $120, not $1200.
