Letter: Shop local complicated
Your front page AP article on May Day, “Shoppers face hurdles in finding ethical clothing” couldn’t have been better timed.
I am a firm believer in “shop locally” and pratice what I preach. I particularly treasure our locally-owned businesses especially Wilson’s, The World Eye Bookshop and the Magical Child. I would not want a Walmart in Greenfield and very rarely visit one elsewhere. But “shop locally” got very complicated for me this week when I bought a pair of spring slacks and noticed that it said on the tag, “Made in Bangladesh.” I did buy them, but after the recent horrific events in one garment factory where such products are made, I know my slacks are not the “comfort fit” as advertised. I will not be able to wear them. Thank you for the in-depth article exploring the challenging issues facing consumers and retailers alike.
