Letter: To our president

President Obama:

I am writing to you as a concerned citizen of our beautiful planet. I, as many, am very concerned about the direction we are going in regarding the way we are separating ourselves from the natural world. It is becoming more and more obvious that this path can not continue for much longer without dire consequences. I know our energy situation is not simple, nor are the solutions. I do not pretend to have the answers. What I do know is that global warming is real and we need reduce our CO2 emissions.

I urge you to reject the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Most scientists say 350 parts per million of carbon molecules in the air is a safe threshold. We are currently at 391 parts per million, and the number is continuing to rise. The tar sands mining procedure releases at least 3 times the carbon emissions as regular oil production from what I understand. I feel that we have a moral responsibility to do all we can do to bring this number down, not up.

Instead of going forward with the pipeline plans, we could be investing our creative and financial resources on other solutions. With conservation and innovation, we still have the ability to turn this crisis around. It seems like we have two choices. We either do make the changes that we need to make, or we don’t. I would hate to have to tell our grandchildren that with what we now know about global warming, we didn’t do what we needed to do to fix it. I fear the time is now, or it may be too late.

Thank you. I trust you will make the right decisions.

JILL BROMBERG
