Letter: A decision on waste
Massachusetts is facing a crossroads. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will soon decide if our state will choose a future of reduce, reuse and recycle, or whether we continue to burn and bury more waste. Recently, DEP Commissioner Ken Kimmell stated his intent to consider lifting the 22-year-old moratorium on new incineration for the state. Lifting this moratorium of burning would harm public health and the environment. Fortunately, the public has the chance to speak out against this proposal by submitting public comments to the commissioner through Feb. 15. We hope the many environmentally mindful citizens of Greenfield will tell Commissioner Kimmell that burning waste pollutes our air, turns recyclables into toxic ash, and is the wrong path for our state.
