ORANGE — A local woman and an Athol man were taken to the hospital after their car crashed into a house.

Willard Newton, 72, of 443 School St., Athol, was eastbound on East Main Street when his car crossed the oncoming lane, left the road, and plowed through several objects before hitting a nearby house, according to Brenda Anderson, administrative assistant for Orange Police.

Janet Lively, 46, of 77 West Main St., was a passenger in the Dodge SUV driven by Newton, according to Anderson.

Both Newton and Lively were taken to Athol Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Orange Fire Department.

Anderson said the accident is under investigation, and that Newton may have had a medical issue that caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

The accident left a trail of property damage.

“The car broke off a fire hydrant at the entrance to Walmart, hit the Walmart sign and a fence, hit a parked vehicle in the yard of 535 East Main St., then hit the house,” said Anderson. That house lies between the store’s two East Main Street entrances.

A Chevrolet pickup hit by the out-of-control SUV sustained heavy damage to its bed. The collision also caused the SUV’s front airbags to deploy, said Anderson.

Anderson said the accident caused damage to the house’s foundation. The building inspector responded to the scene, as well as power and water companies.

Anderson said Tuesday afternoon that no citations had yet been issued.

Newton and Lively’s conditions were not available from Athol Memorial Hospital staff at press time.
