I am an Environmental Issues major at the University of New England and I have been studying the importance of recycling. I am convinced that recycling is an easy way to save our planet. Throughout my campus there is a recycling bin in every room and building. There are more recycling bins than there are trash cans. I believe that Greenfield should have recycling bins next to the trash cans on Main Street and Federal Street. It is a small cost to Greenfield, but a HUGE help to the environment. Recycling is one of the best and easiest ways for our community to make a positive impact on the world. Recycling is important because waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment that we call home. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases are leased from rubbish in landfills. Recycling reduces the pollution that is caused by this waste. A few of Greenfield’s neighboring towns, Shelburne Falls and Northampton have already taken this step toward improving our environment and I believe it is time for Greenfield to do so as well. When I come home for winter break in a few months nothing would make me happier than seeing recycling bins on Main Street and Federal Street.
