Letter: State treasurer
Tom Conroy, candidate for state treasurer, will have my vote in the Democratic primary on Sept. 9. My decision is based on the bold actions he has taken to advocate for a flexible and progressive carbon tax in order to reverse climate change, reduce pollution and foster more renewable energy production.
Last year, Tom Conroy showed foresight in addressing climate change, by introducing the Barrett-Conroy bill, No. 2532. This Carbon Tax and Rebate Bill, a revenue-neutral carbon tax imposed on fossil fuel providers, will cut our climate-changing emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels. This bill would make the proposed pipeline unnecessary by addressing over-reliance on fossil fuels, and by encouraging investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Furthermore, the carbon tax revenues generated from a Carbon Tax and Rebate Bill will be returned directly to Massachusetts households. Every resident would receive either a rebate check or a reduction of sales taxes. A rebate would provide incentives for weatherizing homes, solar panels or additional assistance to vulnerable households.
This is just one example of Tom Conroy’s informed, thoughtful approach to Massachusetts finances. The energy crisis we soon will face in Massachusetts is good reason to get serious about climate change. The carbon tax proposed by Tom Conroy will let us fund the greenest, most affordable and sustainable energy possible, while preserving our region’s great beauty. We need to get behind and lobby for this Carbon Tax and Rebate Bill. It will help to protect our environment and create good jobs. On Sept. 9, join me in voting for Tom Conroy to ensure that his financial expertise and his demonstrated leadership and foresight on this issue will serve the whole commonwealth. Tom Conroy as state treasurer will be good for our commonwealth’s air, water and land as well as its pocketbook.
