Area gas pipeline walk starts in Ashfield Thursday

What follows is a schedule of events planned by organizers of a relay walk across along the Massachusetts route of Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co.’s pipeline. The walk began Sunday in the Berkshire County town of Richmond.

Thursday: Begin Ashfield segment at 9 a.m. on Plainfield border and ending on the Conway border, where at 6 p.m. on Pfersick Road near Beldingville Road where power lines cross they will conduct the “Northeastern Woodlands Indigenous People’s Healing and Protection Ceremony” at what is believed to be the location of a proposed compressor station facility.

Friday: Clarkdale Fruit Farm in Deerfield will host a number of local artists from 1 to 5 p.m. including recording artist Kris Delmhorst, as well as speakers including Rep. Stephen Kulik, D-Worthington. Clarkdale will also present “Images in Peril,” a slide show of photographs and works by well-known local artists depicting areas along the route that could be damaged or destroyed by a pipeline.

Saturday: Walk to Greenfield Town Common will begin at Clarkdale Fruit Farm in Deerfield at 9 a.m., with route following Wisdom Way and plans to join the weekly peace at around 11 a.m. Afterwards, walk will continue south along Deerfield Street, handing off the baton at the Cheapside Bridge around noon.

Sunday: At 10 a.m. on the Deerfield/ Montague bike path bridge, Montague residents will take up the baton from Deerfield and join the walk. Montague walkers will follow Greenfield Road to Hatchery Road, cross the Montague Plains to Lake Pleasant Road, cross Route 63 and end at the Millers Falls bridge where they will hand off the baton to the next group. Erving walkers will walk under the French King Bridge and along the Connecticut River as far as the Riverview Picnic Area.

Monday: The walk will resume at the Riverview Picnic Area at the tailrace from Northfield Mountain and will continue nine miles over the mountain, ending at Laurel Lake.

July 15: The walk is scheduled in Warwick and Orange.
