Letter: Old-time racism

Thanks to Mr. Blagg for the column (Mon. June 30) highlighting the plight of the rapidly-vanishing African elephant.

The editorial cartoon accompanying the piece was especially enlightening, showing us that the ivory slaughter has been going on for at least a century now. Indeed, where else but from a hundred years ago would you have dredged up a cartoon depicting a buck-toothed Chinaman paying off African Negros, well known for their coal-black skin and huge white lips? Thank you for printing this historical relic from a bygone era when casual racism was the norm. I’m just glad you didn’t pay an actual, modern day cartoonist for this work. That would certainly be embarrassing.
