Letter: Safety service

The article about fire department volunteers blamed the influx of professionals into this area, which may be true, however, this does not mean that they are above volunteering.

They receive the same service as those who are not professionals. Evidently they are afraid to get their hands dirty, they leave this for the non-professionals. They seem to think that they are better than those who get their hands dirty fighting fires even though it may be their home or their neighbors.

There are only six members of the Shelburne Falls Fire Department and these have permanent jobs and have to be called to respond. This means that responding to accidents and/or fires takes time and this means that lives may be lost. The ambulance service is in the same predicament.

I am sure that there are professionals living and working in the area who could respond to an emergency within a little time.

All it takes is attending training for a couple of hours, once a month to become a member of the fire department.

I plead that those who are able bodied, professionals and non-professionals to serve instead of being served to take time to volunteer as a fireman or EMT. I am sure that you can learn something that is valuable to either.
