Editorial: Veteran service
Brief thoughts on some of the news happening around Franklin County and the North Quabbin area:
Dateline Greenfield: A tip of the hat to Charles Loven, who has served as Greenfield veteran’s agent for the past 21 years and who is retiring next month. He has provided a voice and a helping hand to plenty of veterans who live in Greenfield. He has served both veterans and the community well.
Dateline Northfield: The effort to turn an old gas station into the new home for Northfield Emergency Medical Services qualifies in our book as re-purposing. It’s an old Sunoco building that closed down in 1998 and through the agency’s effort — and plenty of help from the community — it has been transformed into a place that fits the EMS department’s needs much better than the basement of the fire station. This is a plus rather than a negative for the neighborhood. As EMS Chief Mark Fortier said, “it feels great to have our own space, and our own identity. Doing all the renovations at no cost to taxation, and knowing we have that kind of support from the community also feel good.”
Dateline the region: We’re passed the midway mark of August, which means that fall is rapidly approaching. Thankfully, this is also the time of year that various communities in the region hold all kinds of outdoor fairs, festivals, days and get-togethers. Take advantage of what’s offered because each event usually has something unique to offer. And once it’s gone, you’ll have to wait another year!
Dateline Greenfield: Another Free Harvest Supper on the Greenfield Town Common has come and gone. And, as usual, it truly was an opportunity for the community to come together to break bread and enjoy plenty of locally grown food. A big thank-you to the farmers who grew the food and to the many volunteers who helped cook and serve. Also, a thank-you to the many folks who helped raise money for Farmers Market coupons that the Center for Self Reliance Food Pantry will distribute, so that low-income residents can take advantage of fresh, healthy locally grown food.
