Editorial: A door opens

Credit Alexander Graham Bell with saying, “When one door closes, another door opens; but we so often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.”

We know that Greenfield and Franklin County are going to miss what Rebecca George brought to her role as events manager for the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. From The Brick + Mortar international film festival and the Fringe Theater Festival to Green River Festival and what is now called “The Franklin County Little e,” George provided her special touch.

But we see a door opening with exciting opportunities with the hiring of Lisa Davol as George’s replacement.

Davol, as administrator for Turners Falls RiverCulture project during the past seven years, has provided the right touch to guide in forging a partnership between the arts and business segments of a community. In turn, that partnership has helped create a number of successful events, like the Turners Falls Block Party, that tapped into all kinds of energy. The results have been events that are embraced by both villagers, town residents, neighbors and people coming from far and wide.

“RiverCulture,” as defined by its mission statement, “works to strengthen the creative and cultural industries in the Turners Falls area. We believe that experiencing arts and cultural activities significantly enhances quality of life and is a vital component to a healthy community. By highlighting our heritage and many local assets as we cultivate creative endeavors, we intend to engender a strong sense of place.”

And as Davol said in a recent Recorder story, “I’m certainly not wiping my hands of RiverCulture. I will always be here to support it.”

She’s now taking her talents, enthusiasm and energy to a different stage, though one that clearly is connected to the village of Turners Falls, the rest of Montague and the other towns of Franklin County. We don’t think anyone should be looking back.
