Guess what Ben? ‘Real Americans’ did vote

Here I go: a married white woman over 60 offering a counterpoint to Ben Clarke’s whine.

I have a quite different take on Romney verssu Obama 2012 than Ben. Over the last 18 months, with every right-wing politician and conservative apologist defining for America, through an all-too-willing media, who the “real Americans” are, America, in all its glory, voted! America: Black, Hispanic, Asian, white, poor, not poor, male, female told them, in no uncertain terms, who America really is.

I have news for you, Ben. Candidates Akin and Mourdock were not “crackpots” in the eyes of the Republican Party and its chosen presidential candidate. They were espousing, however disgustingly and indelicately, the Republican platform. The voters response to their insanity wasn’t blue or red; it was “Are they serious?” The answer: “Yes. And that’s not who we are as a nation, in the end.”

Ben seems to want to hang is scornful hat on the fact that Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and women (as if women weren’t a voting block composed of the aforementioned ethnic groups, but rather some deranged, uninformed cabal) were too stupid to understand the election was about the economy. Allow me to explain, Ben. When you thwart or outright refuse to let hardworking immigrants and their children have a path to citizenship and an education and thus, to a better life, that’s an economic issue to them. When you try to disenfranchise voters based on their ethnicity, age and gender, that’s an economic issue to them. When you attempt to not only take away the legal option of abortion as a last resort from ALL women, but also their access to contraception, that’s an economic issue to them. When you try to deny same-sex married couples the same legal rights afforded to heterosexual married couples, that’s an economic issue to them.

That’s the economy, Stupid!

Finally, let me address your insulting quote from George Will, which in itself, is quite revealing of just where the Republican Party is in 2012 and probably beyond. At least John Sununu had the dim-witted honesty to use the word “lazy” in referring to President Obama, for which Sununu is paying dearly in the media. Do you and George really think that most of the readers, short of the dumbest Republicans on the planet, don’t know the meaning of the word “indolent?”

Barack Obama is the president of the United States … again. He has degrees from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. He got us out of one war and is getting us out of another. He averted an economic catastrophe and saved a uniquely American industry and all its counterparts. He “got” Osama Bin Laden, a killer with whom HE had no familial relationship as did the Bush family.

That’s the election of 2012, Ben. “Indolent of mind” describes someone else, but not President Barack Obama.
