Letter: Products of war
This business of training young men to fight and then prosecuting them for committing seemingly immoral acts (e.g. urinating on the corpses of fallen adversaries), is both oxymoronic and outrageous.
The very nature of war is cruel and characterized by uncivilized acts. Usually when these often frightened and shocked young soldiers act out, it is in direct response to the brutal loss of a friend and fellow comrade.
So rather than prosecute and excoriate these tormented patriots, perhaps we should spend more time helping them cope with their trauma and welcoming them home with open and nonjudgmental arms.
