Hi 16° | Lo -11°

Letter: Quite the place

The YMCA isn’t just swimming lessons and basketball! I hate to swim and I never learned to play ball, but as a senior I enjoy activities at the Y almost daily. From socializing with friends there to volunteering at Y-sponsored community events, reading to preschoolers, participating in weight-loss programs, partying at the June Parking Lot Party, enjoying a massage and other feel-good therapies, and, yes, exercise and movement which keeps me in shape and feeling good, there are plenty of options at the Y.

I also enjoy the interaction with a wide variety of folks. Community leaders participate alongside families just scraping by; women lift weights; men take yoga; children learn and grow in the pool after serious lap swimmers relinquish it. All are welcomed and valued, including persons with disabilities who receive attention and therapy, the very young, active families, and even the very old.

Did you know that our YMCA runs one of the largest, most comprehensive child-care programs in Franklin County? The Y offers dozens of options for busy parents, including before-school sare starting at 6:15 in the morning, after-school care, full-day preschool starting at 2.9 years, and school vacation and snow day programs — not to mention a multitude of summer camps! Just about the only glitch they haven’t got covered is sick days!

I encourage you to check out the YMCA in Greenfield, it has programs and services for all ages, abilities, interests and income levels. There is a generous sliding fee scale to help families and individuals participate. This assistance is made possible because of the Y Strong Kids & Families Campaign, Kids-to-Camp Golf Tournament and The United Way of Franklin County.
