Letter: Cheap shot

I was really surprised by your “Snow going” editorial in Thursday’s paper. There are so many worthwhile topics about which to editorialize I am disappointed that you have chosen to criticize school administrators on their sound decision to cancel school for those in the higher elevations of the county on Wednesday.

It may be that the sole purpose of the editor’s comments was to spark coffee shop chatter, but I expect the editorial staff do some research before embarking on your daily editorials. For example, in one Greenfield newspaper I found photo evidence of snow-covered roads and more than 8 inches of new snow in Ashfield (The Recorder, see pages C1 & C4, February 28, 2013). Based on this data, it appears that the decisions you criticize were very appropriate. While we all hate to see school days extended into the summer, school administrators are in a difficult position to find the balance between, as you call it, “pushing ahead” versus public safety. They are easy targets of criticism and on this date your cheap shot fails you.

I hope the editorial staff will get out from behind their desks, get the facts, and see what is going on throughout The Recorder’s entire readership area. What is the problem with that? Are we getting soft?
