Letter: Educational reform

I had a phone conversation the other day from a young teacher who is beginning her master’s degree. When I asked her what her thesis was going to be, she said, “A total revamping of school administrations.”

She said, “Think about all the money we’ll save, if we eliminate principals and superintendents and give the administration duties to the teachers where it really belongs.” We need a solid foundation of family-oriented teachers who are not chastised by administrators to establish policies and make the students’ education the top priority. No more bowing to politicians and ever-changing administrators. Important decisions can be made by committees of teachers with the blessings of local school committees.

We don’t need comparison testing and politicians telling our teachers how and what to teach. We need our teachers to re-establish discipline with our students and also teach them respect for elders, law enforcement, and instill family values. If students see a happy teaching staff working like family, they will be better prepared to face life’s challenges. We could sing, “Politicians stay away from our door.”

I think this young teacher has the right idea. And besides, as I recall every good school had an office manager who really ran the school. I’ll bet we can all remember her name, too.
