Letter: Broken justice
Greg Parody wrote (Jan. 30) “enforce existing laws.” Nothing could be closer to the truth. Our congressmen rally to enforce more gun rules and regulations each time there is a major tragedy. Why don’t they rally to strictly enforce the present laws? Plea bargains, suspended sentences, no jail time unless it is a serious violation.
Our lawyers have torn the Constitution apart. Our judges have become so lenient. If it takes more money to build more jails, do it. The cost to society without any deterrent is greater than the cost of a jail. The population rises every day and crime follows suit. Handing out the sentences to fit the crime might just make a difference. The government can pass all the regulations they want and it won’t amount to a hill of beans.
Timothy McVeigh killed 160 people in the Oklahoma Government Center. The World Trade Center disaster killed more than 3,000 people. When there is a will, there is a way. Once you regulate the gun laws, how are you going to regulate the people destined to murder and kill their fellowman? Osama bin Laden had the will without any guns involved.
