Letter: Information is power
I agree with the observation that our government is large per Democratic Party wishes; and, is likely to respond to increasing security demands for public buildings per Republican Party wishes. A letter writer poses if the current gun control legislation developing in our nation’s capital passes we can expect to have a large, increasingly armed government. The legislation will be a failure because it will drive mentally ill people “underground” and, away from the resources legislation should provide to help them.
This forces me to wonder:
What information is the government compiling for the background checking database to determine whether a citizen may purchase a firearm? Is information from public sources: police reports, crisis intervention, the justice system? If so, what expectation does anyone have of privacy for any word, deed or behavior they perform in public?
