Letter: Community projects

Thank you to Kathleen McKiernan for her article concerning the repairs made at the Tilton Library in South Deerfield. The excellent work of the town administration lead by Bernie Kubiak, Deerfield’s town manager, and Sara Woodbury, Tilton’s librarian, deserves recognition and praise.

It is also worth noting that the project was funded by a grant from the town approved at the town meeting, money that is available thanks to the Community Preservation Act. The CPA is Massachusetts legislation that encourages towns to create a fund dedicated to supporting town initiatives by matching local funds with state funds. Communities can direct funds to historical initiatives, recreational opportunities, open space planning and housing proposals under this legislation with the guidance and support of town officials, town administration and town committees. Recently in Deerfield, the CPA activity has included town cemetery refurbishment and contributions to the preservation of farmland.

We urge the folks in Deerfield as well as those from other towns participating in this program to find out more about these town projects. As citizens, when we explore opportunities to be informed and involved at the local level, we help to create more vigor and integrity at all levels of government.
