Letter: Greenfield orientation

Sandra Boston’s My Turn column “Israel is the original terrorist” suggested that Main Street was laid out east–west to provide a barrier against the Native American population. While that may be the deeper reason, Deerfield’s History relates that initial grants along the Green River were for a needed corn mill below what is now the town center. Greenfield was then Deerfield’s “Green River District” and land grants along the River and house lots laid out on Green River (Main) Street, which ran along the bluff above the Green River. The Main Street-Green River orientation is still one full of promise for today’s Greenfield.
