Letter: Occupy Sandy
I can’t help but think of the thousands of people in public housing still living without heat, water and electricity, having to defecate in buckets then carry it down flights of stairs in the dark. It’s been nearly three weeks. When will this end? Where is the government? This is now reminiscent of the neglect in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
People say, “Why didn’t they just evacuate when they had the chance?” It’s not that easy. Many had no where to go or did not have the resources to get there.
What can we do, as a community, to keep these people in the forefront of our minds, particularly with the holidays around the corner? Imagine, day after day with no heat in below-freezing temperatures.
If readers would like to donate to Occupy Sandy Recovery, volunteer, or stay abreast of all the details, they can visit http://interoccupy.net/occupysandy/, where they will find well-organized information and updates about the various needs and how they can lend support.
Occupy Sandy has set up an Amazon “wedding” registry, where the specific needs are listed, and those interested can order items online and have them shipped to a specific location. This is a great way to give direct support. Here is the “wedding” registry link: http://www.amazon.com/registry/wedding/32TAA123PJR42
