Letter: Amend Citizens United
The Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United has pretty much destroyed democracy in the United States. Retired Supreme Court Justice Stevens feels so strongly about it that it features largely in his new book, “Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution.”
The Town of Warwick voted some time ago to instruct our legislators in the Massachusetts General Court to support such an amendment.
Fortunately, there are still a few statesmen who know this must be reversed for the sake of future generations, both here and around the world. Among them are Sen. Tom Udall, D-NM, who has introduced a resolution, “Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to contributions and expenditures intended to affect elections,” in the Senate (see http://freespeechforpeople.org/node/526 for the text) and Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass., has introduced it in the House.
I urge everyone who reads this to tell your senators and representative what you think about this issue and to ask all your friends in other states to do the same. Sen. Markey may be reached at 202-224-2742, Sen. Warren at 202-224-4543, and Congressman McGovern at 202-225-6101. The Capitol switchboard, 202-225-6101, will connect you with any member of Congress.
