Signup under way for cancer survivor writing workshop

Baystate Franklin Medical Center will offer another session of the “Spirit of the Written Word” workshop this fall and registration is now open.

The 10-week workshop, for western Massachusetts residents touched by cancer, will take place on Thursday nights in Greenfield. Organizers say that the group writing promotes healing. The workshop runs from Oct. 3 to Dec. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Artspace, 15 Mill St., Greenfield.

No writing experience is required and sharing is voluntary and confidential.

The hospital’s oncology department is sponsoring the program, and this year will be the first time it’s run without the help of the now-shuttered Forest Moon organization. There is no cost for participants.

Pam Roberts — a writer, artist and breast cancer survivor of Shelburne Falls and the former program director of Forest Moon — will continue leading the workshop.

When Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly two decades ago, she found writing to be an important part of her healing process.

The writing workshop is limited to 12 participants and registration is required.

To register, or for more information, contact Roberts at 413-625-2402 or pamro@aol.com. Information is also available in the hospital’s oncology department.
