Logs for mushroom-growing workshop have gone missing

Sunderland library forced to cancel May 11 event

SUNDERLAND — The Sunderland Public Library is canceling its shiitake mushroom workshop on May 11 because the 25 white oak logs used to grow mushrooms have gone missing.

Local mushroom ace Erik Hoffner was scheduled to teach how to grow shiitake mushroom on a log to 23 people who signed up and paid $20 each.

The 25 special logs were delivered to the library on April 25 and stashed at the edge of the parking lot. The logs were last seen on April 27 by the town Little League baseball team. On Wednesday, Hoffner arrived to check on the logs and found they were missing.

“I think someone thought they were good firewood and took it accidentally,” said Library Director Adam Novitt.

The missing logs are 3 feet by 10 inches and valued at $125.

The logs can’t be replaced quickly enough. They are cut in late winter full of sap just before the maple syrup season begins. The mushrooms eat and grow on the sap.
