South County EMS posts director’s job

SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Board of Oversight for the South County Emergency Medical Service is seeking a working director to manage the startup of the new regional paramedic service.

Last week, the board posted the job opening for the ambulance director for the regional service serving the towns of Deerfield, Whately and Sunderland with a population of 10,000 and an average of 1,000 calls per year.

The application review period will begin Jan. 22 and continue until the position is filled.

The posting is the first major step for the board as it works to implement the regional service the three towns approved in October. The board hopes to have a director by March to start hiring full-time paramedics and EMTs and launch the service.

According to the job description, the South County EMS board is looking for a director who is an experienced state-licensed EMT, with a preference for an intermediate EMT or paramedic and who is knowledgeable in Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services rules and regulations. The desired candidate would have three to five years of managerial experience managing full-time and part-time staff, budgets and scheduling of shifts.

The director would spend 80 percent of his or her time on ambulance runs and 20 percent on management.

The director would be paid between $60,000 to $65,000 and would report to the Board of Oversight.

The director is required to live within 20 miles of the service base, the South Deerfield Fire Station.
