Arson suspect ordered held after hearing

GREENFIELD — The suspect in the Tuesday night arson of a Shelburne home was ordered held without bail at a dangerousness hearing Friday.

Jeremiah Longe, 32, stands accused of setting his estranged wife’s two-family home on fire while she was out of the state on vacation.

He was arrested hours after the fire started, and faces a single charge of arson of a dwelling.

According to a report filed by state trooper Kyle Gleick, Longe admitted to starting the fire with 10 gallons of gasoline.

Though his estranged wife and property owner, Sarah Hannigan, was not home at the time, her tenant was. Erika Sawyer and her young daughter left the Barnard Road house safely when alarms began to sound.

The house was divided into two sections. Hannigan’s home, in the south side of the building, was destroyed, though the apartment on the north side was spared.

Longe’s next court date is scheduled for May 31. Until then, he will be detained in the Franklin County Jail.

If convicted, Longe faces maximum sentences of 2½ years in county jail, 20 years in state prison, fines up to $10,000, or a combination of incarceration and fines.
