Letter: Saturday parking
An open letter to Mayor Martin:
I’ve just paid a $10 fine for a parking meter violation when I visited the Farmers Market Saturday morning. No excuses, your Honor, I plead guilty. I also want to make a plea for free parking on Saturdays to encourage more people to come downtown.
Shoppers like myself don’t take up parking spaces all day. We come for a quick purchase — I was at the Farmers Market for less than 15 minutes — or to stroll Main Street, from Greenfield Coffee to Green Fields Market and back, browsing in Baker’s, Opus and other downtown stores.
Free parking on Saturdays would encourage that activity, which benefits local merchants as well as shoppers and visitors. That’s got to be worth more to Greenfield’s economy than dimes and quarters, and the occasional $10 fine.
