SHELBURNE — Metaphor Yarns closes shop on Sunday , but will expand its “metaphorical shop” online, offering classes, knitting kits, knitting circles and even “pop-up” stores in Greenfield and Shelburne Falls, from time to time.

Although the 623 Mohawk Trail yarn shop will be closed, “We’re everywhere,” says shop owner Meta Nesbit, for whom it’s named. Besides its website, Metaphor Yarn is on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and has the “Metaphorical Friends” group on Ravelry’s website.

Metaphor Yarns started out in Shelburne Falls, but moved into the Mohawk Trail building it shares with A Notion to Quilt in early 2009.

Nesbit has already scheduled a list of special knitting events and classes for the rest of June, July and August. These include a “Beer and Yarn Tasting” at the People’s Pint in Greenfield on June 17; morning knitting circles at the Greenfield Cooperative Bank’s community room in Shelburne Falls, plus classes on “the mitered square,” brioche knitting, cable knitting, buttonhole techniques and more.

One reason for giving up the shop, said Nesbit, is so she can travel more and spend more time writing about knitting. She also plans to host knitting classes with “guest teachers,” including many local authors — yarn spinners, yarn dyers and pattern designers.

Nesbit is also organizing a weekend knitting retreat in October in a scenic New Hampshire Inn with teacher Beth Brown Reinsel.
