Rowe to meet with North Berkshire supt.

Meeting this week moved to Oct. 10

ROWE — The Rowe School Committee will meet with North Berkshire School Union Superintendent Jonathan Lev on Oct. 10, to discuss the option of Rowe’s joining that school union next year.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the fire station to accommodate the large group of residents expected.

The school board is considering various superintendent options since it was notified over the summer that neither Superintendent Michael Buoniconti nor school Business Manager Joanne Blier would be renewing their three-year contracts with the Rowe District, which did not join Mohawk and Hawlemont for contract renewal negotiations last spring.

Both personnel contracts with the Rowe district expire June 30, as does a three-district cost sharing agreement for superintendency services.

School districts are required by state law to have a superintendent, school business director and special education director, which are services now provided by the Mohawk-Hawlemont-Rowe superintendent’s office.

Rowe is currently without a school building, since an August 2012 fire, but the town is planning to build a new school, and has hopes of its opening in 2014. Rowe’s schoolchildren are currently in classrooms within the Hawlemont Regional School building.

A school board meeting planned for this week with Lev was canceled because it wasn’t posted in accordance with Open Meeting Law.
