Letter: A courageous stand

My thanks and respect for Nelson Shifflett for his fine and courageous essay suggesting that hunters should disavow the NRA. (Recorder, Dec. 26).

Mr. Shifflett, a hunter himself, says, “the National Rifle Association is responsible for the unchecked proliferation of guns in our country and especially guns that by design have no other useful purpose other than to kill people ... The NRA has become a shill for powerful gun manufacturers.”

Personally, I cannot think of a more ridiculous “solution” to the problem than the NRA’s insane idea that we should have armed guards in every school in the country.

What Mr. Shifflett doesn’t point out is that weapons manufacturers in the war industry have bigger and more powerful lobbies in Washington than the NRA. The Military Industrial Complex is reigning unchecked and until we stop them, there will never be peace.
