State Police ID man shot in drug raid

ORANGE — State Police have identified the man who was fatally shot Wednesday as 23-year-old Corey Navarette of 18 Mechanic St., second-floor, in Orange.

The name of the 25-year-old woman who was with Navarette at the time of the shooting, however, has not been released, and State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said no additional information will be released while an investigation into the shooting continues by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, as well as by State Police.

Both were suspects in a narcotics investigation that was being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for Hampshire and Franklin counties.

According to Procopia, the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) Team entered the second-floor apartment during an early morning narcotics investigation, with a search warrant, when the troopers were confronted by Navarette with a firearm. At least one trooper fired a gun, wounding Navarette, who received medical treatment at the scene, then was transfered to a hospital and pronounced dead.

The woman inside the apartment was treated for an eye injury.

The search warrant was obtained to investigate alleged sales of oxycodone and Percocet. The State Police Detective Unit says it had reports that Navarette had access to, and may use, firearms.
