Community Action offering free tax prep

GREENFIELD — Anti-poverty organization Community Action will again offer free tax preparation this year for low- and moderate-income residents in Franklin and Hampshire counties.

The free service, which requires an appointment, will be available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Feb. 4 through April 15. Community Action has offered the service for the past seven years.

Volunteers, certified through the Internal Revenue Service, will prepare federal and Massachusetts tax returns for people at no cost. They’ll also file returns electronically, which the organization said will allow most taxpayers to receive refunds within 10 days of filing.

Along the way, they’ll be looking for tax credits like the Earned Income Credit, which the organization said can generate thousands of dollars for working families. Last year, Community Action volunteers filed over 500 returns, bringing over $500,000 in credits and $980,000 in total refunds into the community.

“Our goal is to make sure the taxpayer receives all the credits they are eligible for, without having to spend money to get them,” said program coordinator Holly Kosisky.

“We also hope to take some of the mystery out of how taxes work, so that taxpayers can make more informed decisions about things like withholding and employee benefits,” she said.

Appointments will be held in Greenfield and Northampton. People who wish to request an appointment can call 413-376-1136 or complete the form found on Community Action’s website at:
