PVRS knife incident leads to arrest

NORTHFIELD — A teenager faces assault and other charges after allegedly threatening a Pioneer Valley Regional School student with a knife Friday on school grounds.

Sgt. Scott Minkler of the Northfield Police said no one was hurt, and the victim was not cut or stabbed. Assault can be defined as putting someone in fear, as opposed to assault and battery, which would involve more direct contact.

“We believe there was another victim, a female victim, who used to date the party who brought the knife to school, and the victim who was assaulted had just hugged the female party,” Minkler said.

The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m and a female student who witnessed the assault was threatened and struck by the suspect, who then fled, according to a release from the Northfield Police Department.

The PVRS school staff reported the incident to the police. Following an investigation, a 16-year-old suspect was located and arrested, and the weapon, a knife with a 4-inch blade, was recovered, according to the release. “The ... suspect does not attend PVRS and it is unclear why he was at the school or why he had a knife in his possession.”

Minkler said the boy allegedly held the folding knife up to the male victim and smacked the female victim in the head with his hand.

The incident occurred under the overhang of the school entrance during dismissal, Minkler said, and the suspect was arrested on a probation warrant later that day by another department after the Northfield department’s investigation resulted in a warrant for parole violation.

Minkler said the suspect is charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a weapon on school grounds.

The suspect is currently being held in custody until his arraignment in juvenile court, police said. State law prevents the identification by police of people under 17 accused of crimes.
