Northfield absentee ballots available for July 7 override

NORTHFIELD — Ballots for the July 8 Proposition 2 1/ 2 override vote are now available from the town clerk.

Voters may pick up absentee ballots until noon on July 7.

The override will decide whether the town will pay $4.167 million for its share of next year’s Pioneer Valley Regional School budget. May’s annual town meeting approved the funds, though the motion was contingent on the passage of the townwide override.

Without the override, the town’s share would be $3.85 million, $126,045 more than the Selectboard and Finance Committee recommended at town meeting. The new amount would be based on the amount Bernardston approved at town meeting. While Leyden and Warwick approved the district’s full request, Bernardston approved a lesser amount, and it takes three of the four district towns to set a budget.

To qualify to vote as an absentee, residents must be out of town, or have a disability or religious belief that prevents them from making it to the polls.

For questions, call the town clerk at 498-2901, ext. 12.

Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. July 8 in Town Hall.
