Downtown retaining wall damaged, injuring man
NORTHAMPTON — A retaining wall on Main Street under the railroad bridge in downtown Northampton was damaged Sunday afternoon and injured a man who was climbing on it.
Police said the man was climbing the concrete wall about 1:30 p.m. to get into a car parked in front of the structure when a section of the wall dislodged.
The falling concrete injured the pedestrian’s ankle and caused minor damage to the car.
The man, who was not identified by police, was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
Police said the man reported that the driver’s-side door of the car was not working, so he had climbed the wall to get to the passenger side.
Police roped off the area around the approximately four-foot section of wall that was damaged. Police did not an estimate about how much it would cost to repair.
No citations were issued in connection with the incident.
