TURNERS FALLS — After a pause of more than a year, the building at 176 Avenue A is back in the banking business. Greenfield Co-operative Bank opened its seventh office this week in the building most recently home to Bank of America and historically a financial institution since early in the last century.
Greenfield Co-op bought the property in 2012 after the national chain moved out, with plans to renovate and open a branch office and ATM this year.
“We just finished work literally with the opening (Monday),” said GCB president and CEO Michael Tucker.
Tucker said the bank has been looking to open a location in Turners Falls for years, but as a small bank has to pace its expansion.
Tucker said the bank has charge of almost $20 million between Turners Falls, Montague and Millers Falls, the larger of the five villages in the town of Montague.
“So we had a good base of customers there already,” he said.
Tuesday, branch manager and Turners Falls native Brenda Denison and the three other full-time employees greeted customers while work continued next door in the newly subdivided space.
Tucker said the bank has renovated and plans to rent office space in the building, but has preserved the original vault and the exterior, adding accent lighting for the brick facade.
The bank is fully operational with an ATM, safe-deposit boxes and a coin counter. The lobby and drive-up are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closing at 6 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
Greenfield Co-operative Bank has its main office at 63 Federal St., Greenfield, with a nearby commercial services office and four branch offices in Greenfield, Northfield, Shelburne Falls and Sunderland; the Turners Falls office is now the fifth.
The downtown addition returns the number of banks in Montague to two, with a Greenfield Savings Bank branch near the southwestern end of the avenue.
