Gill-Montague school assessments up by 1.5% to 2.2%

Next stop: Town meetings

TURNERS FALLS — Having last week approved the district operating budget for the coming fiscal year, the Gill-Montague Regional School Committee this week finalized the figures they are requesting of the member towns.

Both assessments have decreased since the latest projections.

Joyce Phillips, School Committee chairwoman, said the total budget has decreased by $320,476 as some long-term debts were recently paid off. The committee approved the final figure of $16,968,368 last week, so Phillips said the reduction will require an amendment on town meeting floor.

The assessments, however, are final and come to $7,965,557 from Montague, a 1.5 percent increase over this year’s assessment, and $1,439,343 from Gill, a 2.2 percent increase, Phillips said. The rest of the spending comes from state aid and assorted grants.

Residents in Gill and representatives in Montague must now vote to accept the assessments at their annual town meetings, scheduled for May 4 in Montague and June 11 in Gill.
