Have a voice and a vote at town meeting

MONTAGUE — There are many open seats for town meeting members, the elected representatives responsible for voting on behalf of the populace at town meetings. Nonmember residents may speak but not vote at town meeting, provided they are registered voters.

Seats available are as follows:

∎ Precinct One: Two three-year seats

∎ Precinct Two: One three-year seat

∎ Precinct Three: One three-year seat and three one-year seats

∎ Precinct Four: One three-year seat

∎ Precinct Five: Three three-year seats

∎ Precinct Six: Five three-year seats and two one-year seats.

Nomination papers can be obtained from the town clerk. Only 10 signatures from registered voters who live in a candidate’s home precinct are required to earn a place on the ballot, and the candidate’s signature counts.

Town meeting convenes annually on the first Saturday in May. Usually, there will be a special town meeting in the spring and again in the fall.

The deadline to obtain papers is 5 p.m. March 28 and all nomination papers must be returned to the clerk’s office by 5 p.m. April 1. The election will be May 20.

Dog licenses
now available

MONTAGUE — Dog licenses are now available in the town clerk’s office. All dogs age 6 months and older must be licensed and tagged each year. A license for a neutered or spayed dog is $5, a license for an unaltered dog is $10. The clerk’s office requires proof of rabies vaccination and proof of spaying or neutering unless already previously provided. There is a late fee of $20 after May 31.

If you no longer have your dog, let the town clerk know by calling 863-3200, ext. 203.

License renewals may be obtained through the town’s website: www.montague.net only if your dog’s rabies vaccination used for last year’s registration has not yet expired.
