Letter: Wounded Warriors
On Jan. 31 at Taylor’s Tavern, Tim Farrell and Scott Cote came out to help Ice Stars for Wounded Warriors raise $2000 by being “Celebrity Bartenders.” My friendship with them has been an amazing experience and I feel very honored to have them on board. Also, I cannot thank WHAI enough — Mark and Nancy Donahue — for their continued support.
Ice Stars for Wounded Warriors is a nonprofit charity that is in its third year of holding a celebration every April — consisting of a hockey tournament with military and civil service teams, a parade to honor our military and a world-class ice show at UMass Amherst. All proceeds after paying off bills are donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
This event was started because of my own son being injured in Iraq and how it made me feel so helpless. I needed to find a way to help these young men and women returning with injuries. And I did NOT want to see these kids come home and be treated like our Vietnam vets were! So, I decided to take my two passions, teaching figure skaters and hockey players the skill of skating, and have them come together for our wounded military men and women. My goal is to put on the most unique event in the U.S.A., stand proud to say we know these kids and show them that we support them 100 percent.
Some of you have told me that you will not donate to Ice Stars for Wounded Warriors because they “do not support war!” Shame on you! NONE of us support violence, but we all enjoy our freedom — that, by the way, is not free! — we have lost a lot of great kids who gave their lives for our freedom. We have this wonderful U.S.A. because of these kids who will put U.S. first and do whatever they feel necessary to keep us safe.
Please check out the Ice Stars for Wounded Warriors web site (email@example.com), like us on Facebook, and come on out on April 26-27 and join us in celebrating our wounded men and women who have returned home.
Thank you all who joined us in our Celebrity Bartenders — it was a booming success!
