SHELBURNE FALLS — Yes, Virginia, there really is a Crawford County, Indiana.
And the fact that Warner Bros. is filming “The Judge” in Shelburne Falls — a setting meant to depict Crawford County, Ind. — seemed to amuse the real Crawford County’s real sheriff, Tim G. Wilkerson.
He called Mocha Maya’s Coffeehouse and The Recorder on Friday morning, after finding a “Google Alert” that mentioned his sheriff’s department.
“He thought it was really neat,” said Kristin Greylock of Mocha Maya’s, who spoke with him about the movie. “At first, I thought it was a crank call.”
She said the sheriff wanted to know if they had any pictures of the Indiana patrol cars.
“He was basically looking for pictures,” said George Forcier, managing editor for The Recorder, who also received a phone call. “He seemed kind of tickled by it.”
When reached later in the afternoon, Wilkerson said he found photos of the cruisers online.
“They did a good job. They were our colors,” he said of the brown-and-tan vehicles. “They had our state seal.”
Crawford County, Ind., has a population of about 10,000, and the county seat is English, Ind., with a population of about 600. According to the county website, it is a rural haven for tourism, with paddling, skiing, fishing and spelunking among its attractions.
When asked if there is a Carlinville, Indiana, Wilkerson said he’s never heard of one. “I’ve got two state troopers with me, and they’ve never heard of it,” he added.
A Google search shows there is a Carlinville, Ill.
Wilkerson said Crawford County is a hilly area with lots of forestland. “We’re set on the Ohio River, about 40 miles from Louisville,” he said.
When asked if filmmakers have come to Crawford County, he said scenes from “A League of Our Own” were filmed in Huntingberg, Ind.
“The Judge,” being filmed in Shelburne Falls this week, stars Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vera Farmiga and Leighton Meester. It’s about a successful lawyer who returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral, then learns that his estranged father is a murder suspect.
Filming continues next week in various locations around the region but not likely in downtown Shelburne Falls.
