Letter: Non-existent center
I’m disappointed to see The Recorder (editorial, Feb. 27) get into the “both sides do it,” centrist rhetoric about the sequester. We only got the sequester as a last-ditch Democratic effort to stave off the debt-ceiling crisis, one of many manufactured by an obstructive and intransigent Republican Congress. There’s no “center” when one side of our political system has gone off the deep end.
This country needs a responsible opposition party. It won’t get one until today’s Republican party shows that it understands, and is willing to help govern on the basis of, modern economics — to say nothing of modern evolutionary biology and modern climate science. And the GOP won’t be moved to develop that understanding and willingness until local newspapers like The Recorder stop hunting for a governing center that at present doesn’t exist.
