Mohawk teens delivers Valentines to area veterans
BUCKLAND — Valentine’s Day was Monday for soldiers living in the Holyoke Soldiers Home, when students from the Mohawk Trail Regional School delivered 200 handmade Valentine’s Day cards made by the grade-school children in the Mohawk District.
“It’s become kind of an annual event,” said Superintendent Michael Buoniconti, an Air Force Reserve colonel, who started the Valentine’s Day tradition three years ago. “There’s nothing like colorful drawings from children to raise people’s spirits.”
Buoniconti said he got the idea about three years ago, when he was at Westover Air Force Base. “It’s become an annual event. The kids have been very responsive,” he said.
Last week’s storm postponed Mohawk’s Valentine’s Day delivery to the veterans, so four high school students delivered the cards on Monday, accompanied by Buoniconti, who was in dress uniform. “We started at the canteen, then went into several commons areas, and then into some rooms, because some residents have mobility problems,” he said.
