NEW SALEM — Area fire departments responded to numerous brush fires over the weekend as dry conditions and gusty winds fanned flames, the most extensive burn on the border between New Salem and Orange.

Angus “Terry” Dun, spokesman for the Northwestern Massachusetts Incident Management Team, said the fire began as a permitted burn off Fay Road in New Salem Sunday afternoon and quickly spread across an open field and into the woods, covering 10.3 acres and spanning the Orange town line before firefighters from multiple area departments were able to extinguish it.

Dun said 15 or 16 fire departments including the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s District 10, responded to help fight the fire, while District Nine firefighters staffed the fire watch towers.

About 50 people were involved and no one was hurt and no homes were damaged, Dun said.

“There was a farm house to the north that was at risk but they were able to stop it prior to reaching that location,” Dun said.

The fire was reported at 12:10 p.m. and was under control before 3 p.m., with firefighters likely to be on scene for a couple of hours more, Dun said.

In Greenfield

The Greenfield Fire Department extinguished a small brush fire by the transfer station off of Wisdom Way Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters hosed down and raked a patch of ground and sections of felled tree trunk at the top of the bluff above a Western Massachusetts Electric Company lot.

The embers seemed to be fully extinguished by 3:15 p.m., within a quarter of an hour of the report. Capt. John Whitney said the cause of the unattended fire would be investigated.

Turners Falls, Northfield

On Saturday, the Turners Falls Fire Department responded to two small brush fires in the area of Lake Pleasant and Green Pond roads, Capt. Leon Ambo said the fires and another in Northfield were likely caused by sparks from wheel rims on pavement and were quickly dealt with.
