Selectman’s race set for Hawley May 5 ballot

HAWLEY — Two familiar names will be on the May 5 annual town election ballot, each vying for a three-year seat on the Board of Selectmen.

Incumbent John F. Sears, who was elected last February to finish the term of the late Selectman Richard Desmarais, is running for his first three-year term on the board. Also running is Hussain A. Hamdan, a former School Committee member who also ran against Sears in the February 2013 special election.

For any residents who haven’t yet registered to vote, Tuesday is the last day for voter registration, for both the annual election and annual town meeting on May 5. To accommodate registration, Town Clerk Pamela Shrimpton will hold special hours that day from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Town Office.

Running for re-election to three-year terms are: Town Clerk Shrimpton; Assessor Richard Kean; and Kirby “Lark” Thwing for the Mohawk Trail Regional School District Committee. Thwing is also running for a one-year seat as town moderator.

No one is on the ballot for a three-year term on the Hawlemont School Committee or for a one-year auditor’s term.

However, Hawley will hold a Meet the Candidates Night at the Town Office, 8 Pudding Hollow Road on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. Write-in candidates may go there to declare their candidacy, and residents can ask questions of the selectmen’s candidates. Call Shrimpton at 339-5518 (office) or 339-4091 (home) with any questions.
